Starting Out: A personal view from an early career mentee

Full case study reviewing the success of the Starting Out Programme. A the two-year mentoring pilot programme for science and mathematics teacher trainees and early career teachers.

Starting Outis a two-year mentoring pilot programme funded by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA). It supported science and mathematics teacher trainees and early career teachers in three regions of England – London, East of England and West Midlands.

The mentee,who decided on a teaching career after many years as a research chemist at one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, completed her PGCE in the summer of 2010 and found the course valuable, gaining an insight into the various methods of teaching. However, she felt that the course did not equip her with the curriculum knowledge and resources to teach chemistry at all levels from 11–18.
