Full case study reviewing the success of the Starting Out Programme. A the two-year mentoring pilot programme for science and mathematics teacher trainees and early career teachers.
Starting Outwas a two-year mentoring pilot programme funded by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA). It supported science and mathematics teacher trainees and early career teachers in three regions of England – London, East of England and West Midlands.
The programme aims were to:
- increase recruitment to the profession
- improve retention of science and maths trainees and teachers
- facilitate mentees in becoming effective practitioners more quickly.
In response to these aims LSN identified a number of models of mentoring: face-to-face subject; e-mentoring and network mentoring and trained approximately 65 science and mathematics mentors to support over 800 mentees during the pilot.
