Dubai Ports Worldwide – improving learning efficiency

How to run a cost and time effective international management development programme

In June of 2011 Dubai Ports Worldwide (DPW) engaged LSN LRI as their development partner for the conversion of their established and successful ‘Managing Terminal Operations’ programme, turning it into a blended programme for delivery to their International Management Teams across over 40 port and terminal operations they run across the globe.

This multi-module programme had been successfully run for several years previously, but always on a face-to-face basis with managers, internal tutors and trainers coming together in locations around the world for blocks of taught and delivered training.

Knowing that this was far from time or cost-effective, discussions were entered into with LSN LRI from their training operations centre in Dubai. LSN LRI were chosen for the international blended learning work they had undertaken for other organisations, and on the strength and reputation of their ILM Accredited Blended Qualifications and Awards Model, which would form the platform for the programme’s management and support.

Formerly delivered content from each of the modules was selected for conversion, and turned into engaging and interactive e-learning material. Managers are now able to work through the course material online and complete tests and assessments between and prior to attending the vastly reduced face-to-face events.

Many hours of content have already been successfully converted, with a further planned schedule of content development to start shortly.

Close work between LSN LRI project managers and content designers with the tutor and SME team from DPW has means that the whole feel of the content as well as the technical content reflects the culture and values of the DPW.

The platform allows information, support and communications processes between managers and tutors to be enhanced, resulting in improved continuity and activity throughout the programme, not just at the events.

The reaction from the multi-national audience, including both experienced and new managers, has been excellent, with the concept of true blended and integrated learning becoming a strategic direction for DPW across their training offering.
